WHAT DOES BAREFOOT SHOES FOR RUNNING MEAN?

New to barefoot shoes. We are in Montana wherever it could get to -twenty or lower. Any tips on boots? Am I ideal in wondering you'd want the thick boot to protect from the intense cold?
